Overview

OYO Communities is a French renewable energy company operating a portfolio of authorized solar plants exceeding 400 MW. Their mission centers on accelerating France's energy transition through collective self-consumption. This model lets citizens, businesses, and local producers share renewable energy within shared communities.

To bring this vision to life, OYO needed a digital product capable of connecting every participant in the chain: consumers, producers, and community managers.

We came in at the concept stage and stayed through to market launch, delivering a production-ready platform that surfaces real-time energy data, automates payments, and gives users practical sustainability guidance grounded in their own consumption patterns.

Our customers love what we do

"We have been working with HBM since June 2023, and the experience has been consistently strong. The team got up to speed on our domain quickly and has delivered tailored solutions backed by real technical depth.

What stands out most is their proactive approach. They surface issues early and come up with solutions, not just questions.

Communication has been clear and timely throughout, which makes the collaboration feel like a genuine partnership. We're continuing to work with HBM on new initiatives and have full confidence in their ability to support what's next."

Client Needs and Challenges:

OYO had a strong commercial vision and deep domain knowledge, but they were missing the engineering and product's capability to translate that vision into shipped software. They came to us looking for a partner who could own the technical side end-to-end.

The specific gaps they needed to close:

  • No in-house technical capability. Building a cloud-native solution that integrates with the French national energy grid sat outside their core competencies.
  • Tight launch window. The MVP scope was substantial, but the timeline left no room for slow ramp-up or extended hiring cycles.
  • Complex integrations to built. The platform required hands-on experience with grid APIs, third-party services, and secure payment infrastructure, areas where finding qualified talent quickly is genuinely difficult.
  • Senior expertise on flexible terms. They wanted seasoned engineers and product specialists without the overhead and rigidity of permanent hires, while keeping the budget predictable.
  • Disciplined execution against fixed constraints. Both deadline and budget were firm, so every architectural and product decision had to earn its place.

Services Delivered

We embedded with OYO from day one, treating the engagement as a true product partnership rather than a vendor relationship. Our work spanned discovery through delivery:

Product discovery and roadmap planning

We ran structured discovery sessions to translate OYO's business model into a sequenced delivery plan, prioritizing features that proved value early and deferred work that didn't move the needle for launch.

Product ownership

Our product owner took responsibility for backlog, stakeholder alignment, and release planning, freeing OYO's leadership to focus on commercial growth and partnerships.

Solution architecture and cloud infrastructure design

We architected a scalable cloud platform built to absorb growth in users, communities, and grid integrations without expensive rework down the line.

UI/UX design

Energy data is dense and unintuitive for most users. We designed interfaces that make consumption, distribution, and financial performance immediately readable for non-technical community members.

Web and mobile development

We developed a web and mobile platform that delivers real-time energy consumption and production data to Consumers and Producers within the community. This build included heavy data visualization dashboards, invoicing and payment flows.

Third-party integrations

We connected the platform to French grid data sources for live consumption and production tracking, and integrated Stripe alongside other third-party services for automated and compliant payment flows.

DevOps and continuous delivery

We set up the CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and infrastructure-as-code from the start, so the team could ship safely and frequently from the first sprint onward.

Outcomes

The engagement moved OYO from concept to a live, market-ready product within the agreed window and budget. Concrete outcomes:

  • A scalable product roadmap and release plan that continues to guide post-launch growth
  • Live integration with French energy grid data, enabling accurate, real-time visibility into both consumption and production
  • Interactive dashboards that turn raw energy and financial data into decisions that community members and managers can actually act on
  • Secure, automated payment handling through Stripe and complementary services, which is critical for the credibility of a multi-party energy marketplace
  • Web and mobile applications launched together, giving energy communities a single, intuitive entry point regardless of device

The partnership has continued past initial launch, with new product workstreams and feature expansions building on the same foundation.
