Betteries AMPS GmbH is a Berlin-based startup transforming second-life electric vehicle batteries into connected, affordable power systems. Their approach is rooted in circular economy principles, such as extending battery lifecycles, lowering costs through a battery-as-a-service model, and ensuring responsible recycling at the end of life. Betteries needed a mobile application that would allow end users to monitor and control their power devices directly from a smartphone.
HBM came on board as the development partner responsible for taking the app from initial design through to market launch. Our team, which included a UI/UX designer, mobile developer, test engineer, project/product manager, and DevOps specialist, covered the full delivery lifecycle: interface design, cross-platform development in Flutter, backend API testing, infrastructure improvements, and ongoing product management.
Beyond the technical scope, this engagement held particular meaning for us. In late 2022, Betteries launched their Power to Ukraine initiative, delivering decentralized power to hospitals, schools, and kindergartens affected by infrastructure attacks. Contributing to that mission made this project personal.
"You did such an outstanding job getting us to this point. The Betteries team is extremely grateful for your work and support of our mission."

"I think the app right now looks great, works well, and provides significant ownership value to our customers. You are a team of great professionals, but more so great people, and it was our pleasure to work with you on this project."

Betteries had a strong hardware product and a clear vision for how users should interact with it, but lacked the in-house capability to build and ship a polished mobile experience.
The gap between product concept and a production-ready app required both technical execution and structured product thinking.
Needs and challenges of the project:

HBM served as the end-to-end technology partner, responsible for designing, building, testing, and deploying the mobile application while strengthening the underlying infrastructure.
We designed an intuitive interface focused on giving users clear, effortless control over their Betteries devices across both iOS and Android.
HBMai’s team selected Flutter for cross-platform delivery from a single codebase. A project/product manager worked alongside the development team throughout, translating Betteries' evolving priorities into actionable sprint goals.
Our test engineer owned quality assurance across the mobile app and Betteries' backend APIs, validating every integration point before release.
We rebuilt the solution infrastructure on Docker and Kubernetes, replacing the legacy setup with a containerized pipeline built for production-grade reliability and easier scaling.
Within six months of project kickoff, the app was live in both the App Store and Google Play with all core features shipped.
The engagement established a lasting partnership that extended well beyond the initial launch.
